How the matching works

No magic, no horoscopes. Here is exactly how your answers become a footballer — explained in plain English.

Step 1 — Your answers become six numbers

Every option you pick carries small weights across the six axes (Technique, Tactics, Pace, Physical, Defending, Attacking). Choosing to beat your man one-on-one adds to Technique and Attacking; choosing to drop and cover adds to Defending and Tactics. Add up every answer and you get six running totals — your raw profile.

Step 2 — We look at your shape, not just your size

Here's the part that keeps results honest. If we simply compared totals, everyone who answered "safely" would look like an average midfielder, and the all-rounders would match with everyone. So instead we centre your profile — we look at where you lean relative to your own average. A profile that spikes on Technique and Attacking matches a forward, even if the raw numbers are modest. Your two strongest traits genuinely steer the result.

Step 3 — We find the closest player

Your centred profile is compared with every footballer in the database using a distance measure — think of it as plotting both of you in a six-dimensional space and measuring how far apart you are. The closest players are your matches. Because we compare shapes, a balanced "complete" player no longer sits next to everyone, which is what used to make those matches feel meaningless.

Step 4 — Honest percentages

You'll never see a fake 99% match, and you won't see everyone bunched at the same score either. The affinity percentage is scaled so that a very close match reads high, a loose one reads lower, and there is a visible gap between your number one and your number four. If three players sat at an identical score, the result would tell you nothing — so we don't let that happen.

Legends you can actually reach

We lowered the defensive and tactical ceilings of the all-time greats slightly, on purpose. It means that if you really play like Diego Maradona — all Technique and Attacking, less interested in tracking back — you can be matched with him, instead of being told no human could ever reach a legend. The greats are the reward for a distinctive profile, not an impossible wall.

Teams, too

The same logic matches you with a team. Iconic sides carry their own six-axis identity — some built on possession and technique, others on pace and directness, others on defensive control. Your profile is matched to the collective style that fits you best.

Your privacy

The whole calculation runs in your browser. We store only anonymous, aggregate axis statistics so the site can show you how you compare with the average of everyone who has played — never anything that identifies you. Full details are on our privacy page.
